Rigging Period Ship Models: A Step-By-Step Guide to the Intricacies of the Square-Rig by Lennarth PeterssonNaval Inst PrThe rigging of period ship models is arguably the most complex and daunting task for the modeler. An eighteenth-century man-of-war boasted mile upon mile of rigging, over 1,000 blocks, and acres of canvas. To reduce the rigging in scale and yet retain an accurate representation is a formidable undertaking. After studying numerous eighteenth-century museum models, the author has drawn some four hundred diagrams which clearly show how each separate item of rigging is fitted to the masts, yards, and sails. Each drawing deals with only one particular aspect and is accompanied by a logical and straight forward narrative. For example, the fore deadeyes and channels are shown before the shrouds are added, and these are depicted before the ratlines are added. Whether a model maker needs to rig a whole ship or just requires information on one aspect, it is all here in this beautifully produced volume that no modeler of period ships should be without. The Private Lives of Birds: A Scientist Reveals the Intricacies of Avian Social Life by Bridget StutchburyWalker BooksBiologist Bridget Stutchbury takes readers along on her escapades as a bird detective, stalking subjects through the woods for hours, taking blood samples from nestlings for DNA analysis, and mounting miniature tracking devices on tiny backs. She captures several young white-and-brown male purple martins and paints them the darker color of mature males to see if the painted youngsters are more successful than their unaltered peers in wresting away nest sites from older males. They are! The Private Lives of Birds is a treasure trove of fascinating insights into bird behavior. But understanding the social lives of birds does much more than slake our curiosity. Aware that many birds will not occupy an area unless other birds are already there, biologists used mirrors and two-dimensional cutouts to lure Atlantic puffins to establish colonies off the coast of Maine, getting curious puffins to visit the site and linger long enough to encounter a live bird. As Stutchbury says, "Trying to save birds without understanding what makes them tick is a shot in the dark … birds are highly social, and their social needs are at least as important as their physical needs." Video Relay Service Interpreters: Intricacies of Sign Language Access (Gallaudet Studies In Interpret) by Jeremy L. BrunsonGallaudet University Press“Signed language interpreting is about access,” states author Jeremy L. Brunson at the outset of his new book, and no manifestation of access for deaf people can be considered more complex than video relay services (VRS). In Video Relay Service Interpreters: Intricacies of Sign Language Access, Brunson delineates exactly how complicated the service can be, first by analyzing sign language interpreting as a profession and its relation to both hearing and deaf clients. He describes how sign language interpreters function in Deaf communities and how regulatory processes imposed by VRS providers can constrain communication access based on each individual’s needs. Brunson proceeds by acclimating readers to the environment of VRS and how the layout of the typical physical plant alters the practice of interpreting. The focus then falls upon intended VRS users, providing insights into their expectations. Interpreters shared their experiences with Brunson in 21 formal interviews and discussions. Many remarked on the differences between face-to-face interpreting and VRS training, which often runs counter to the concept of relating informally with deaf clients as a way to expand access. This thoughtful, sociological study outlines texts that originate between users and interpreters and how they can be used to develop VRS access. Video Relay Service Interpreters concludes with the implications of VRS interpreting for sign language interpreting in general and suggests where scholarship will lead in the future. Brothers and Sisters: A Novel (Explores the Intricacies of Experience, Knowledge and Bias Which Perpetuate Inequalities and Segregated Lives) LARGE PRINT by Bebe Moore CampbellWheeler Publishing, Inc.Set in the white-hot center of racially troubled Los Angeles, Brothers and Sisters is the story of Esther Jackson, an African-American who has built a promising career at a downtown bank. When a black man is hired as senior vice-president, Esther is heartened - until his interest in a white bank officer percolates into sexual harassment and Esther is forced to choose sides. She must rethink her life and vision of the American dream even further when a looting of bank accounts casts suspicions along racial lines. With a view both compassionate and honest, Campbell probes the hearts and minds of whites as well as people of color. Campbell's intriguing cast of characters reveal the fears and hopes of people caught in a web of shrinking opportunities and institutionalized stereotypes of race, class and gender. Adroitly using the great racial divide of Los Angeles, this absorbing novel explores the intricacies of experience, knowledge and bias which perpetuate inequalities and segregated lives. AllenAuthorHouseMy ultimate goal when creating "Intricacies of Manhood" was to try and help preserve the family structure, by offering some insight on some of the most important variables necessary to maintain relationships. There are so many single parent families nowadays that it is almost frightening. The family structure has diminished to a dream, in comparison to what was once an entity. Many single mothers are doing a good job raising children, but they can only offer certain elements of the family structure. It is priceless for a child to be able to witness the interaction between his mother and father around the house daily, the way a man respects his woman, and vise versa. Additionally, even when respect isn't present in the household, it can be used as a guide to what is necessary to show respect. Many single mothers today are raising their young boys graciously and sternly, showing all that is needed to make it in society, but they're forced to learn about being a man using bits and pieces of the men that come in and out of their lives, from experiences in their lives, or from mentors whom they see on a regular basis. The trouble with that is young boys spend most of their time at home with their mom. Now, it's great to want to be like your mom, because she is hard-working, respectable, and strong, but it's a whole other thing to want to be your mom! I wanted to ponder with the idea that some of these elements could be the cause of our huge percentage of divorce in our society today, and I wanted to point out some of these variables so that my readers can grasp a better understanding of some of the points made in "Intricacies of Manhood" |
